Love this so much. When people ask me what I do and I tell them I’m a writer, 60% of the time, they answer, “(I, my friend, my daughter) has always wanted to write a book.” Internally, I cringe, but externally I smile, nod and look interested in hearing the reasons why their story will be so amazing—a story that will never make it to a laptop screen let alone a bookshelf.

Thank you, Ann Patchett, I now have a better response. If there truly is a writer in them, it will be a challenge they can’t unhear and will tug on their hearts and motivations until they can do nothing but write. Until writing becomes an extension of who they are as a person. Until they can’t go a day without putting words on paper or a screen. And they and the world will be the better for it.
